Lucknow: The rift has widened within Samajwadi Party camp with former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav’s uncle Shivpal Yadav and Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh mulling support to NDA’s presidential nominee Ram Nath Kovind.
While SP patriarch Mulayam Singh has already welcomed Kovind’s candidature despite his party officially endorsing the candidature of Congress’s Meira Kumar, Shivpal met UP CM Aditya Nath Yogi two days ago and is believed to have discussed the presidential elections.
Shivpal has already said that he would go by Netaji’s decision on presidential poll. His camp could support Kovind became apparent when the SP leader’s loyalist Deepak Mishra issued a press release “pledging open support to Kovind”. Mishra also thanked PM Modi for this selection.
Ram Nath Kovind is sure to win Presidential election but what is of real interest is his victory margin over Opposition candidate Meira Kumar. The ruling NDA was slightly short of 50 percent of value of votes in the electoral college but now, with the support of several non-NDA parties, its candidate appears all set to get around 65 percent votes. BJP leaders believe that it could reach 70 percent mark or even more.
